There once was a little girl who journeyed with the turtle. She did love asking her friend many
questions and she did also love his answers.
One day she was standing at the edge of the river and she saw a boat float past. In the boat was a boy who
smiled and waved. The little girl waved and then turned to her friend the turtle.
“Turtle, why is it that the boy has a boat and I am walking on the land?” she asked.
“I don’t know,” said the turtle.
“But, turtle! I thought you knew everything!”
“I don’t,” he said.
“But…” the little girl could hardly believe what she was hearing!
“Then again,” said the turtle, “I know almost everything.”
The little girl laughed and laughed. “I suppose one day you will know why the boy has a boat…”
“Oh I know why the boy has a boat,” said the turtle.
“But, you said…”
“I just don’t know why you and I are on the land,” he continued. “Of course, we could be in the river, floating
down.” He thought for a moment and continued again, “but neither one of us has a boat. And I don’t know
why we don’t have a boat, do you?”
The little girl laughed again. “No, turtle, that is one thing that I do not know.”
“Oh,” he said. And they continued walking while the little girl hummed a tune just for the turtle. It was one
she had never hummed before, but then all of her tunes were always brand new. The turtle loved that about
his little girl too.
